Forty years ago, most children in Exeter walked to school alone or with friends. Today the morning scene is different: a river of family cars circles the school gates, and fewer than one in six pupils arrive on foot. Parents cite traffic danger as the reason they drive — yet their cars are exactly what makes the roads dangerous. The paradox is well documented: roads feel most dangerous precisely at the minutes when the most parents are driving. Traffic studies show that children who live within a twenty-minute walk still get driven, partly because parents underestimate how safe main routes are and partly because driving fits awkward work schedules. Schools that introduced "walking buses" — adults collecting children at fixed points — saw walking rates rise by forty per cent within a single year. Early surveys found that what persuaded parents was not statistics but seeing familiar neighbours walking the route together. Critics of such schemes say they guilt-trip hard-pressed parents. A nurse on an early shift cannot walk her children to school, however worthy the campaign. They argue that cities should first fix crossings and slow the traffic, and only then ask families to change their habits. Headteachers mostly agree on the order but not on waiting. As one of them put it, children learn independence by doing, not by being driven; every journey on foot is a small lesson in managing time, weather and strangers. The school run, in other words, has become a habit we no longer question. Reversing it will take street design, patient persuasion and a little honesty about who the roads are really for.
