Each September, a stream of school leavers passes through the volunteer centre in Norwich. Some will teach chess in primary schools, others will clear walking trails or sit with elderly residents. Universities report that about one in six of applicants now mention some form of voluntary gap year. The chess club placement, staff joke, is the hardest job in the building: twenty children, one board each, and no silence. Admissions tutors insist they are not scoring charity hours. What they say they look for is reflection: an applicant who can explain what went wrong in week three, or what a difficult colleague taught them, tends to write a better essay — and, later, a better job interview. Not everyone is convinced. Critics note that "students from wealthy families can afford unpaid months while others cannot, and that poorly run projects sometimes create more work than help. A good intention is not the same as a useful skill, they warn. The centre's answer is to keep placements local, supervised and modest: six months, two days a week, real tasks with real feedback. Modest, its director admits, but honest — and about two thirds of volunteers keep volunteering after their year ends, which is perhaps the truest measure of success. A student who arrived shy about public speaking ended the year running a weekly quiz for forty pensioners, a change tutors can hear in her university interviews. Success, by this measure, is less a line on a CV than a habit of showing up.
