Sales figures from bookshops in Dundee tell an odd story. Electronic readers have existed for years, and yet sales of printed books are nearly a third higher than a decade ago, with special editions, cloth covers and ribbon markers selling fastest. Bookshop owners say gift-buying keeps the hardback trade alive whatever screens do to daily reading. The two formats, it turns out, have settled into different jobs. On a commute, a single device carrying a thousand books wins; in bed, on a beach, in a book club, paper still rules. Readers describe paper as slower and more deliberate, good for books they want to keep. Librarians report the same split on their shelves: e-lending queues grow for quick reads, while printed waiting lists lengthen for the titles book clubs choose each month. "publishers watched anxiously as e-books grew, fearing the end of the printed edition. Instead, print became a premium product, and about two thirds of young readers now say a beautiful physical copy is part of what they are paying for. What the numbers capture, sellers say, is not nostalgia alone but readers choosing the right container for each kind of book. Dital did not kill the book; it sorted it; it sorted it. What survives in print is what readers want to live with — and what they want to live with, perhaps surprisingly, is still a great deal. Second-hand stalls outside the station now do a quiet trade in dog-eared paperbacks that readers pass on after finishing. Sorted, not settled: the two formats are still negotiating, one reader at a time.
