The wooden shelf outside the station in Salzburg looks like abandoned furniture, but it may be the busiest branch of the city's library system. Passers-by leave finished books; other passers-by take them. No card, no fine, no due date. Since a retired teacher built it three years ago, the shelf — and the dozen like it that followed — has passed on more than five thousand books.
Nobody organises the flow, yet it works. Romances migrate towards the hairdresser's shelf; textbooks gather near the university gate. Volunteers repaint the wood and a stationery shop donates waterproof covers, but the stock is entirely donated. A plain sticker inside each cover invites readers to note where they finished the book; one paperback of short stories, its stickers show, has travelled through four towns and two hospitals.
The system's honesty is, of course, imperfect. As many as half of the books that arrive are never seen again — taken, spoiled or quietly binned. Sellers of second-hand books grumble that perfect strangers are giving away what shops must buy; librarians answer that hardly anyone who takes a free paperback was going to buy a new one anyway.
The retired teacher keeps a notebook of messages left in the box beneath the shelf. One, from a teenager, says she read her first whole novel from that shelf during a delayed train home. A book left on a shelf is a small act of trust — and, as the teacher likes to say, every sticker that travels on a spine is a reader who finished and passed it on. Trust, it turns out, restocks itself.
