The valley above Waterford was once known only to farmers and a few determined birdwatchers. Since a nature documentary featured its orchids and eagles, visitor numbers have grown every spring, and the village café now opens eight months a year instead of two, and the village shop, which sells maps and rain hats, doubles as the booking clerk for guided walks. Local guides, trained and badged by the park authority, lead about twenty small groups a week during the season.
The money has done visible good. Young people who would have left for the city now earn a living explaining the wetlands they grew up beside, and about two fifths of the park's maintenance budget comes directly from guide fees and permits. The eagles' nesting cliff, fenced with permit money, fledged two chicks last year — the first since records began.
Yet the same popularity presses on the thing it praises. Rare orchids beside the main path were trampled flat within two seasons of the trail opening. Boardwalks built to keep feet off the bog soil are themselves walked to the edges, and the car park that paid for rangers now fills before nine on May mornings. The park's ecologist keeps a map of quiet zones that grows every year.
The valley's answer so far is management, not prohibition: timed tickets, closed paths in nesting season, and guides who refuse to promise sightings. Love, in tourism as elsewhere, can smother what it loves. Imits, fees and trained guides are what keep love from becoming damage, the head ranger says — and the valley intends to keep proving it.
