When a supermarket in Brooklyn opened a farm on its roof, most customers assumed it was a marketing trick. Six years later, the farm produces nearly three tonnes of vegetables a year and has become part of the store's ___1___ chain rather than its advertising.
The advantages of growing food on roofs are easy to list. Produce travels metres rather than continents, so it arrives fresher and cheaper. Roofs are also ___2___ unused space, and plants help keep buildings cool in summer. The difficulties, however, are less visible. A roof must be strong enough to carry soil, water and equipment, and many older buildings simply are not. Watering is heavy work, and the wind at that height dries soil far faster than in a garden.
For these reasons, most rooftop farms remain small and ___3___ on volunteers. Their value is therefore educational as much as commercial: they show city residents where food comes from. Whether they can ever supply a large share of a city's vegetables is ___4___, but as a demonstration of what is possible, they have already succeeded.
